We invite you to part-take in inhabiting and continuing building our settlement in the final year of Hello Wood’s Project Village Programme!
Project Village is a three year long architectural experiment that examines the relationship between communities and their built environment through part-taking in the politics and process of building and ultimately establishing its own settlement.
We started Project Village in 2015 when we built the “Portable Village” where we tested the travelling settlement as an event-catalyst and community space. In 2016 we found our final destination and settled in Csoromfolde. Through our theme, “Settling-Rituals of Arrival” we made the first architectural steps towards our vision: Building the permanent rural campus of Hello Wood’s nomadic faculty.
This year we will bring the settlement to life! We will move in, live, learn, work, party in our Village. Together we will pursue building and will further define the identity and cultural vibrancy of our campus. We will continue, question and reflect on the artefacts of settling from 2016, strengthening the threads of our community and ultimately the village fabric. Constructing our village on the border of the ideal and real, we will equally respond to the day-to-day challenges at hand as well as composing future scenarios of habitation and learning.
Hello Wood started as an art camp in 2010 for students in architecture, art and design and has grown into an award winning, unique international summer school involving more than 20 universities and 30 countries. Hello Wood integrates various fields of art, design and science; builds community and encourages talent. All projects are shared, developed and built in a collaborative process. Students from various fields, nationalities and institutions work together with practicing professionals and academics.
Projects are mostly constructed from wood and the results of a unique interplay of art, innovation and social commitment. Promoting the idea of “thinking with your hands”, Hello Wood provides a unique experience in the craft of building, inventing, testing and an intimate understanding of the material itself. It has the ability to provide a productive reciprocity between a concept, the design and its realization. We believe that being socially responsive and utilizing material constraints in an innovative way is crucial in achieving sustainability.
Our goal is to promote the construction process as a platform for discussion, innovation and exchanging knowledge. Hello Wood is a profoundly democratic opportunity to connect different generations, designers and artist with various cultural, academic and professional backgrounds. Up until 2015 Hello Wood’s workshops did not have a permanent place.
By end of the year we found a piece of land in the Balaton Highland Region of South West Hungary, and it was time to settle! Since 2016, we invite you to share the responsibility in becoming the caretakers of Csoromfolde.

2. Put together your application Your application is to be handed in on-line and will consist of:
I.a motivation letter-(essential part of the application)
In order to be part of this collaborative process we ask you to respond toanyof the following questions, themes of Project Village17 in a motivation letter (400 words maximum):
Are villages of today or tomorrow different from cities? How does a rural environment affect your daily routines? Which parts/aspects of newly built settlements do you find the most fundamental? Which project/artefact/function of PV2016 do you find fundamental to continue and why? Which skill or resource do you consider crucial in establishing a settlement? Why does the Project Village need you? What do you think are the most urgent questions facing the countryside in your region? What is the ideal learning environment for you in relation to Hello Wood’s Rural Campus? What does being responsible and responsive in architecture mean to you in relation to Hello Wood’s Rural Campus? In your view or based on your previous experience, what is missing from the village?
And last but not least, Hello Wood is an independent democratic educational platform that is constantly testing new collaborative work processes. It's an academy that challenges student-teacher, client-designer hierarchies at work. In order to help us in this process: What are you expecting from the Hello Wood's Summer school? What do you lack from your current university's design programme?
II.a portfolio of your previous work (essential part of the application) Please include all relevant work samples, including images of projects, models, installations, structural experiments that you think demonstrate your skills and experience in working with material. Samples demonstrating your experience with fabrication or working in a woodshop are welcome. Please prepare a pdf document in an A3 format (11“x17“), not larger than 20 MB.
If you have participated in a Hello Wood summer school before, you don't need to include a portfolio, as we are already familiar with your experience and expertise. However, we still ask you to respond to some of the proposed questions, as these are relevant to this year's debate specifically. + optional: III. choice of topic for presentation: Be part of the debate! (not essential part of the application)
Our summer school is a uniquely democratic educational platform, challenging traditional models of student-teacher synergies at work and testing democratic work practices. To promote student involvement in the debate, this year we would like to include student presentations in the evening lecture series. Please let us know if you have a topic or a design project you would like to share in a short 10-20 min presentation. Please describe the topic in one - maximum 2 short sentences. This could be your undergraduate or graduate thesis work, dissertation or student research at any level related to the Project Village programme of Hello Wood Summer School. Note that you can have a successful application without proposing a presentation topic! However if you do we are encouraging you to share it with us and become part of the debate!
Important: Please join these 2 files (motivation letter + portfolio) into 1 pdf ! The name of the file should be: firstname_surname_application.pdf and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org
